Wow, so it has been awhile since my last blog post! I’ve been super busy getting my education on! I am now a certified childbirth educator with Baby Steps and am working on my doula certification with Doula Trainings International. I feel like I haven’t stopped going in months. So I’m sorry for the delay in getting up new posts.
With that said. I just stepped outside last week and went ‘Oh crap, summer has hit the South!’ We’re talking 95+degrees down here and the humidity… I can say that as long as I live in the South I will never, ever have need of a sauna. Being as hot as it is though, work has really been kicking my heiny.
You see my job is it Saddle Buddies Therapy where we provide Hippotherapy (horse therapy) to kids with special needs. I am outside in the heat from 8-5 most days that I work and it can be exhausting. I have been hydrating, hydrating, hydrating, but there comes a point when just water won’t do it. You need to get all those electrolytes back into your body. Some people find that using supplements by the way of electrolyte powder is the best solution for them to be able to rehydrate. Personally, when I was younger I used to just reach for a bottle of Gatorade, but being the well-researched organic food-loving person I am today I can no longer do that. Sucralose, artificial flavor, food dyes…no thank you. So I had to come up with an alternative fast!
This recipe is great for more than just the heat. I use it when I am sick or fighting off a bug. I also bring it with me when clients are in labor to help give them energy and keep them properly hydrated.
Here is the recipe I use for my Homemade Electrolyte Drink.
- 1 Cup Coconut Water (I like Harmless Harvest which can be found in most Kroger's)
- 1 Cup Water
- 1/2 Juice of Choice (You can fresh squeeze or buy it from the store)
- 1/4 teaspoon Himalayan Pink Salt
- 2 Tablespoons Raw Honey (optional)
- Combine all your ingredients in a pitcher and stir. Then enjoy when the weather gets hot! These also make great popsicles!
